TONE
The etymology of “tone” can be found in the Latin tonus meaning “stretching quality of sound” along with the “tension, raising of voice, pitch of voice, accent.” It also is heard in the ton of Thirteenth Century Littré, meaning, “of voice,” along with the ton of old Provencal, ton in Catalan, ton, tono in Spanish and tuono in Italian. This method of surveying the relational quality between sound (whether or not it emanates from a “voice”) stretches into painting where “tone” might indicate a color and shading system.
